DIY Garage Makeover: Tools that get the Job done like a Pro

Is your garage in need of some of some maintenance or repair? Maybe you have decided to spruce it up a little or are even considering turning that unused garage space into extra living space? Whatever the case, most of these jobs can be done by a DIYer with the right tools to get the job done right. Here is some of what you may need.

Ceiling Panels

It is not uncommon for plasterboard on garage ceilings to sag over time.  For a quick fix use some adjustable props. These work well with an aluminium plank, which will push the plasterboard back upinto contact with the joists so that it can secured into place again.

If the ceiling is past the point of repair, you’ll have to pull down the damaged sheets and replace them. Lifting panels of plasterboard can be a job which requires two or three people as they are both heavy and awkward. In this circumstance a Panel Lifter is invaluable as it makes it easy for one person to do the work of three and reduces the chance of the plasterboard cracking when being lifted it into place.

Securing the plasterboard sheets, new or existing, is easily accomplished with an Auto Feed Cordless Screwdriver. Just put the nose of the screwdriver into position, push into the sheet and squeeze the trigger. All three of these items are available for hire at Centenary Hire. While you wouldn’t want to go out and buy all these tools for a single DIY job, you can hire them for the length of time you need at a very small fraction of the cost to buy them.

Walls

When it comes to the walls, if you’re adding a new one you might consider some outside assistance for this. When it’s put up or if you’re working with existing ones, don’t miss the opportunity to get some new paint on the walls. To apply the paint quickly and evenly, check out our Electric Airless Spray units. Your paint provider will be familiar with this equipment and will be able to best advise you of the type and quantity of paint to purchase for the job. Also, if the weather is cooler, you may need a powerful Space Heater that will help the new coating to apply within the correct temperature range as well as dry faster. The quicker it dries, the sooner you can move onto the next part of the project and get the use of your garage back.

Floors

Want a garage that has a show room floor?  Consider painting the concrete or putting an epoxy coating over the concrete as there are some great finishes available.  Check out All Purpose Coatings for some ideas.   As either of these processes require the concrete to be prepared, you will need to use a concrete floor grinder.  If you already have bare concrete then a low speed Floor Grinder & Vacuum Kit will most likely do.  If the concrete is badly stained, painted or has another coating on it, then you’ll most likely need to use a more aggressive grinder like the Meteor Floor Grinder & Vacuum Kit.  However for smaller areas or obstructed areas, you may be able to use a smaller hand held grinder like the 175mm Surface Grinder & Vacuum Kit.

These are the tools any experienced tradesperson or handyman would use on the job and at Centenary Hire we are happy to offer them for hire so that you can use the right tool for the job. Give us a call and we’d be happy to show you what we have in stock and which tools you may need and in what order. That’s what we’re here for and again, we’re happy to help.
