Summer Storm Preparation
Summer Storm Preparation
Summer in Queensland can get pretty hot and it can be notorious for its ferocious summer rainstorms. It’s not uncommon to have days on end of heavy rain, which will have your down pipes and drains working overtime to handle the sheer volume of water. The last thing any homeowner wants to deal with is water damage, as it is a giant mess and a costly one too.
With all that in mind, now is the perfect time to do a little summer storm preparation around the home, taking steps to ensure you’re ready for the heavy rains. To help aid you in the process, here are some simple steps and tools that you can use.
Clean Out the Gutters
The gutters on your house play a very important role during a rainstorm. They direct the water off your roof and away from your foundation. Of course, in order for this to happen, the gutters need to be clear of debris so the water can flow freely to the down pipes. It’s a good idea to clean them on a regular basis and ensure there are no obstacles.
If you’re going to be cleaning your gutters, it’s a good idea to do it safely from a sturdy platform. Pick a ladder with a height that will allow you to comfortably peer into the gutters. You can choose from options like the 1.45m Platform Step Ladder or the 2.3m Platform Step Ladder – depending on the height you need. Each one is made of aluminum with a fold-down platform and a handrail.
Give the Drains a Little Attention
Because your storm water drains are working overtime, it’s also a good idea to give them some attention before they clog and cause the water to back up. Equipment such as the electric eel drain cleaner is fantastic for clearing significant blockages such as tree roots or stubborn blockages such as a large build ups of leaves, dirt and other garden debris. These are rather powerful tools so you need to be careful by following operating and safety instructions.
If you’re focusing on just maintenance of downpipes and stormwater drains, then the electric hydro-jet drain cleaner is perfect as it takes care of dirt, debris, and leaves by using high-pressure water. The petrol hydro-jet drain cleaner does the same thing simply with more power. Sometimes it’s a better option if you do not have easy access to a power outlet.
Something as basic as steel drain rods can also prove to be useful with the job of drain cleaning. These are pushed into the drain to clear it.
It should be noted that drain cleaners should only be used in the sewer by a licensed person.
Have a Pump Ready to Go
In case the unthinkable does happen and you do get water seepage, tools like a puddle sucker pump can prove to be well worth it. It is able to take care of large volumes of water, sucking it up from flat surfaces. The fact that it’s small and lightweight makes it highly portable too.
Now if your task involves pumping water from your swimming pool (maybe it has become contaminated with debris after a big storm), then you need something more powerful like the electric submersible pump. As its name implies, this one can be submerged in the water and is strong enough to empty a pool – including any slimy particles.
Having the right tools on-hand will help to ensure your home is summer storm ready.
