Drain Cleaning Options
[dropcap]D[/dropcap]rain cleaning may not be the most appealing or exciting job to do around your home, but it’s certainly one that has to be done. Over time, dirt and debris build-up in drains and pipes can lead to weakening of the structure and increase the risk of blockages and leaks. In addition to weekly and monthly maintenance of the drains in your kitchen and bathroom, it’s a good idea to give them a thorough spring cleaning every once in a while. Here are your options:
For Your Well-Used Drains:
If you rinse your kitchen and bathroom drains out with cleaning and unblocking solutions regularly, the drain will be easier to thoroughly clean. For this job, you may want to consider using drain rods, which are joined together and pushed into the drain to dislodge any blockages. They are available in either steel or PVC. For the kitchen or bathroom drain that’s a little more blocked, consider this sink drain cleaner – a continuous length cable with a handle which is manually turned by the operator to feed it in and out of sink drains.
For Outdoor Drains:
Cleaning an outdoor drain is usually a much larger job than inside your home, since you’ll likely be dealing with far more debris. Storm water drains and downpipes are more likely to collect dirt, leaves, small rocks and other debris, leading to a higher risk of drain blockages. For the outdoor drain, you may want to consider the following tools. This Hydro-Jet Assembly, which uses rear-facing high pressure water jets to drive the water through the pipe, whilst front-facing jet nozzles cleans the pipe as it goes along. You can choose from the electric or Petrol Hydro-Jet options. Bear in mind that these tools are not designed for use in sewers; if you’re cleaning sewer lines, you’ll need to use the Electric Eel Drain Cleaner. It’s an easy-to-operate tool that must only be used by a licensed person.
For Serious Damage:
Sometimes, simply cleaning your drains isn’t good enough. If your plumbing system is old or has been seriously neglected or damaged, then don’t waste your time trying to clean it. In this situation, drastic measures may have to be taken – don’t rule out taking your shovel and digging the pipes up to replace them, or having a plumber re-do your whole system.
Drain cleaning is nobody’s favourite chore, but it’s essential for a well-maintained, efficient home plumbing system.
