Planning for an outdoor party

[dropcap]P[/dropcap]arty planning doesn’t need to be tricky, it just requires a little forethought. Depending on the type
of party you have in mind, you may need to hire tables and chairs or even a basic stage for the
entertainment. Making a checklist so that you don’t leave anything out is a great idea. Suddenly
realising an hour before the guests arrive that you forgot to order a toilet trailer is probably a bit late
in the day to fix what will almost certainly be a very big problem, especially if you did not intend for
guests to use the facilities inside your home.

Here is a quick guide to help with starting that checklist.

Prepare a Guest List

It’s sensible to prepare a guest list rather than issue a general invitation to all. The more people who
show up unexpectedly, the harder it will be to provide enough food and drink. If your budget is tight,
try to stick to close family and friends, and if you prefer not to have kids present, don’t be shy about
letting your guests know. They might be peeved, but at the end of the day, this is your party, so it’s
your rules.

Once you have a guest list, you can figure out how many tables and chairs you will need. Go for plain
folding tables and chairs and jazz them up with tablecloths, table decorations and chair sashes. Fresh
flowers, dried flowers, or even themed decorations such as seashells create a great appearance
however it you are more budget conscience, look for inexpensive decorations at your local “cheap
shop” or consider making your own.

Food and Drink

Food and drink is often the biggest expense, so don’t go too crazy with your menu. For an outdoor
party, it’s best to keep things low-key. For example, you could set up a BBQ area where guests can
grill their own steaks, sausages or burgers. If you elect to do this, make sure there is ample lighting.
A fluorescent light or LED work light should do the trick. The last thing you want is for guests to have
a nasty accident or burnt snags!

If hot food is too much hassle, prepare a buffet of cold snacks guests can browse when they are
feeling hungry. A selection of cold meats, salads, cheeses, and fresh fruit will be plenty on a hot
summer’s day. Don’t forget to provide plenty of cold drinks including non-alcoholic too.

Final Details

Finally, nothing adds more atmosphere to a party and brings people together than a patio heater or
brazier, especially on a chilly Brisbane Winter’s evening.
